Shells can make work faster more efficient, can program in the shell
Login files can be customized to alter the user environment
Programs can be connected together (pipes), output and input sent elsewhere (redirection)
Pipelined jobs can make use of mutiprocessor systems without any parallel programming
UNIX runs many jobs, the shell helps you control jobs and allows jobs to be run in the background
UNIX has many tools that allow file manipulation and searching
